I hadn't really an idea of what to do on the Friday night. It was damp & cold. Sitting outside the fantastic 20x10m solar powered tent provided by the lovely Jonah & Louise to get the best of the remaining daylight, I was attempting to design the letters for the banner. As I sat, a group of young teens arrived. They started asking questions & I suggested they design something.
10 minutes later, I no longer had letters to prepare as Josh had created some funky letters with his design for the banner & was happy to come back Saturday with them on A4. 20 minutes later people dropped in on us whose kids wanted to design too & all of a sudden it's 2 hours later, there's a load of designs in the box & we're now making do with 2 wind up camping lights & some fairy lights. It was great fun!!! Then the solar power went off & the chilled music Mr Peace was playing, stopped.
"When the music's over, turn out the light!"
Time to say goodnight.
By 11am I was ready for gutta designers & we started by tracing Josh's letters on. While that was being taken care of by a few girls others approached the table & started creating designs on A4 & then it became evident that this wasn't necessary so people just got on & designed straight onto the silk. Everyone participating happily - kids, mums, dads, grandparents. There was a good buzz about the place. Aided by the face painting & comic strip making going on simultaneously. We were also blessed with a group doing a voice workshop - there was beautiful singing in the air. The designing was all over by 1pm. The gutta could now dry.
It's now 4.25pm.Time to get colourful. I laid out the lids & the paints & showed a few girls how to select the colours & asked them to help others if they saw I was busy elsewhere. It worked a treat. We almost managed to keep all the letters white as well. The paints were added until there was room for no more.
To all the lovely ages taking part from beginning to end - I salute you & God bless you. Remember, we were all taking part in the same spiral of creative comunication, connected & communicating through our hearts. Communication in unity = Community. What great spirit everyone shared. Inspiring!!!
Special thanks go to the We did it Crew! They happily joined in the parade & the chanting. As we stopped to show the banner at full stretch I'd call out, 'Forward/Back' & the girls at the ends would take 2 steps forward & the kids in between would take 2 steps back & let go, creating a sail effect as the wind caught the silk (we'd rehearsed 2 minutes before the parade began) accompanied by the impromptu lively chant, 'Who did it? We did it!' (In a previous life I was a Sgt Major)
The banner ended up being hung on the railing at the front of the stage. The We Did It Crew had their photo taken - much to their delight (what they really wanted to do was get up on stage & sing - Mr Peace, be ready to make this happen next year?) Everyone was happy, I was happy & as the orange setting sun burst through the clouds, my work was done. I could now relax & enjoy the rest of the festival & the astonishing skyline in peace. Of course there was all the tidying up to do, hmm, it waited til the morning.
Great Festival, Roll On Chagstock 2009!
